JazzCatNine and Marianna Leporace

This is me and my group JazzCatNine, with the lovely Brazilian singer Mariana Leporace. I met Marianna in 1992, when I was forming a group to play my songs, for a show at the Rio Jazz Club in Rio. That place doesn´t exist anymore. They show was great, with Marianna and Claudio Nucci on vocals, Andre Neiva bass, Pascal Morrow violin, Marcio Resende tenorsax and flute, Paulinho Black drums and me on the piano,keyboards and vocals. This picture was taken many years later, at the Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, where we did a show. Except me and Marianna you can see Lena Horta playing the flute (sister of the great composer Toninho Horta) and Emerson Mardine on bass.

How I started to be a filmmaker ...
Hello.
I´ve been posting quite some images lately. They say that sometimes one image speaks for a thousand words. Depends. I like to express myself in different ways. I like image in movement. When I was about 8 years old, I wanted to be a theatreplay writer. I would go with my father to the rehearsals of the theatre (he was the composer and musical-director of the Royal Theatre of Den Haag) , and started to write small plays myself, that I would perform with my brother, or I would convince neighbourhoodkids to act in my plays, that would be usually about medieval horsemen or farwest slaughtering between cowboys and indians. Then, when I was about 13, I took the double eightcamera from my father ( no , not super8 , even more antique: double8 ! ) and made my first short featurefilm "Killer Joe" , with my brother as principal actor and two girls as supporting roles. It was a very surrealistic flick, with smart angles, Bunuel kind of situations and a Quincy Jones soundtrack. Even the "Ironside Theme" that Tarantino used in "Kill Bill" , I had put in my 1970 short "KIllerJoe" hahaha ! After seeing "Satiricon" by Fellini when I was 15 years old, I was shocked for one week, and a year later decided to film the complete Divina Comedia by Dante in a modern version. Ofcourse I had to read the book first, so I got myself a nice paperbackedition. In the summervacation I would read one chapter each night, starting with the "Inferno" ... , with illustrations of Gustave Dore ...

So, after reading the whole inferno which I loved, I got bored with the purgatorio, and just took a quick look at the paraiso, actually only to see if their would be some naughty pornographic scenes between Dante and Beatrice. As that was not the case, I stayed with Hell, and started to think of a way to make my own version of "La Divina Commedia" ,or shortly: "La Commedia" . As my highschool in that year was celebrating its 15th birthday, with three days of festivities, I suggested the board of the festival that I would make a super 8 film especially for the comemoration. They loved the idea, and didn´t have the slightest notice of what I would do. So they payed the S8 films, and I made my version of "La Commedia". In my opinion, "Inferno" in the film would be everything thats fun at school: parties round the fire on the beach, smoking pot at the toilet, sex, drugs and rock and roll. The "Purgatorio" was the actual classes at school, "preparation for "Paraiso" ... the society after school. Only in my film the "Paraiso" is one big shit, the real inferno ... people working like sheep in offices, routine, boring adultstuff, death. And for a change, my brother would be the main actor, as a modern Vergilio with a helmet, driving on a motorcicle, leading us through the story. The story ends at a car cemitery, where Vergilio, not seeing well because of his motorhelmet, doesn´t meet Beatrice , between the trash of the old and destroyed cars. The last image is Vergilio driving on a dike, to nowhere ...Paradise Lost. The film was a big succes at the "Lustrum" comemoration of my highschool (The Haags Montessori Lyceum) and my history teacher was in tears. Hahaha. Two years later I went to filmschool.

My video-concert
Last year I wrote a piece for piano and video projection. It was about "deconstructing Bossa Nova", I would take a song of Tom Jobim, the famous "Corcovado", and take only the two four bars from it. The whole "Noturna" music is based on those four bars, with an electronic base of distorted loops on the backround. I would play the grand piano with three videoprojections behind me. I made three videos of ten minutes, that played simultaniously, while I played the piano live, together with the videoprojection. The first performance was last year, 2003, at the Theatre Sergio Porto in Rio de Janeiro. It was quite a succes, with a crowded house.

Violeta´s Story: O Circo de Vladivostok
This story is on the site of Violeta today: Is´s a really weird story, as I was born on the 29th of july of 1957 ...
Read the story and you´ll understand why it´s weird, hahaha !!!
As I am a convited atheist,and very sceptical,sometimes people write things that are really amazing ..."The Twilight Zone" ?!
So ... is there any relationship between a black cat that speaks German and sings Russian songs and me? Well, the end of july, the lionsign, my nick and productioncompany is jazzcat(nine) I dont speak Greman but Dutch (that´s close enough, though I am not so fond of the Germans...) and I have an aunt in The Hague (Haia) Holland, who has a Choir of Russian Munks ! And thank god I´m not sterile !!! Hahaha. And by the way, one of my favorite films is a quite unknown film called Mazeppa, directed by the owner of a French horsetheatre called "Zingaro". Very good and very Fellini. Take a look at the site:

De volta ao circo de Vladivostok
Nem todos os números do circo de Vladivostok eram inofensivos. Bernardo Braccio era capaz de coisas terríveis.
Not all the acts of the Vladivostok were unoffensive. Bernardo Braccio was able of terrible things.
Desde criança, ele era diferente dos outros meninos: conseguia transportar animais, objetos e pessoas com o poder do pensamento.
As a child he was alreay different from the other kids: he could transport animals, objects and people with the power of his mind.
Uma vez, aos oito anos de idade, ele trouxe para dentro de sua casa, no sul da Itália, um legítimo camelo marroquino. Ele andou por toda a cidade nas costas do camelo e, um belo dia, cansado de brincar com o animal, mandou o bicho de volta pro Marrocos.
Once, when he was eight years old, he brought an authentic Marrocan camel into his house in the south of Italy. He rode on the back of the camel through the whole city, and one day, tired of playing with the animal, he send it back to Marroco.
Os pais de Bernardo ficavam maravilhados com seus poderes e, aos poucos, a humilde casinha da família se tranformava num verdadeiro depósito de tapetes persas, cortinas de veludo, talheres de prata. Tudo conquistado através do poder do pensamento do menino.
Bernardo´s mother and father were enchanted with his powers and, bit by bit, the simple house of the family was transformed into a true deposit of Persian rugs, velvet curtains, silver knifes and forks. Everything obtained through the power of the mind of the kid.
Quando Bernardo era adolescente, ele começou a trazer para dentro de sua casa todas as moças que desejava*. As meninas da cidade morriam de medo de dormir e acordar na cama de Bernardo e isso realmente veio a acontecer, não apenas com as meninas, mas com praticamente todas as mulheres da cidade, inclusive as casadas e as muito velhinhas. Foi por isso que Bernardo teve que fugir e entrar para o circo.
When Bernardo was an adolescent, he started to get into the house all the girls he wanted* The girls of the city shivered by the thought of sleeping and waking up in the bed of Bernardo, and that actually happened a lot, not only with the girls, but with almost all the women of the city, including the married and the very old.That´s why Bernardo had to escape and ended up at the circus.
Assim que Bernardo surgia no picadeiro, a platéia se esvaziava. Ele era capaz de deixar os corpos dos espectadores profundamente marcados. Sem poder ver o que as atingia, as pessoas sentiam a dor causada por chicotes, canes, prendedores, mas nada podiam fazer. Um grande número de espectadores voltava para a casa com as costas completamente esfoladas e algumas mulheres também tinham o rosto cortado.
The moment Bernardo started his act in the circus , the public would run out of fear. He was capable of leaving the bodies of the spectators with profound marks. Without percieving who was doing it to them, the people would feel the pain caused by whips, canes, clamps, but they were helpless. Many espectators would return home with their backs full of marks, and some women had also their face cut.
Mas a pior apresentação de Bernardo aconteceu no dia 7 de dezembro de 1956. Conta-se que neste dia, todas as mulheres presentes na platéia e todas as mulheres da pequena cidade de Nilog ficaram grávidas através do poder da mente de Bernardo. Nove meses depois, as 15 mil mulheres deram à luz gatos pretos que falavam alemão e cantavam lindas músicas russas. Os gatos se espalharam pelo mundo, mas eram estéreis e não deixaram descendentes.
But the worst spectacle of Bernardo happened on the day of 7 of december of 1956. They tell that on that day, all the women in the public and all the women of the small town of Nilog got pregnant through the power of the mind of Bernardo. Nine months later, the 15 thousand women gave birth to black cats who spoke German and sang beautiful Russin songs.The cats spread around the world, but they were steril and didn`t leave any descendents.
*Nos anos 50, ficou famoso o caso de uma atriz que desapareceu misteriosamente do set de filmagens. Depois, descobriu-se que ela estava em poder de Bernardo.
*In the fifties, there was the famous case of an actress that dissapeared misteriously from a filmset. Afterwards, they found out she was in the power of Bernardo.

May 23rd, 2004 7:29 am Fahrenheit 9/11 wins the Palme D'Or!!!
Last night, the jury here at the 57th Cannes Film Festival awarded the Palme D'Or, one of the highest honors in filmmaking, to Fahrenheit 9/11. Michael and everyone who worked on the film were completely blown away. Four of the nine festival jury members were American, and only one of the jurors was French. Fahrenheit 9/11 is the first documentary to win the Palme since Jacques Cousteau's "The Silent World" in 1956.

Filming in Belem (updated version Thursday 18 may)
Some weeks ago I went to make an item for Dutch television in Belem de Para. Belem is the city at the end of the Amazonriver. Its where the Amazonriver turn into an immense delta of islands and streams into the Atlantic Ocean. I went there to film about a project that combats children prostitution and sexual abuse. The project is supported by a Dutch NGO.
I had never been in Belem, so that was a new experience. I took my own camera with me and would hire a betacam-camera in Belem to do the interviews. It´s quite a long trip ... first you go by plane from Rio to Brasilia, and from there to Belem, about 5 hours of flight. On the trip to Brasilia most of the passengers in the morning are bussinessmen or politicians, as the government of Brasil is in Brasilia. So thats tipical, in the morningheath of Rio all guys in dark suits with ties and JamesBondbriefcases ... am I the only filmmaker in the plane ? When the plane lowers to land in Brasilia I bent over to look through the window to find the presidents Lula´s house ... I am a fan of Lula, although his government until now is a kind of deception ... too conservative, too much alike the older government ... is that why we voted for him ?
The plane takes off again and heads for Belem. I usualy take the seat at the corredor ... so I have the impression that I can always get out and take a walk ... without asking permission.
The man at my side on the chair in the middle is big. Too big. He actually needs two chairs, so half of him is bubbling over my armrest and the other half of him ispressing the man at the window. He ´s reading the newspaper, and takes the space for it. Finally we land in Belem. Its quite a modern airport, much more confortable than I had expected, and the first thing I do is to get a map of the city at the "information for tourists"desk. All the otherdesks are for taxis, and all the girls at the desks trie to sell their taxiservices as if they were old and experienced ladies of the night, trying to seduce their potential costumeres. "Taxi ! Here to the city for only 25 ! Only 20 !" I rush out of the airport to get a normal , local cab, as usually they have cheaper prices and go by the meter. "Taxi, taxi" they also shout, and I ask: "How much is it to the city, more or less ?" "About 20" The man says. "OK, but I want by the meter" as I know that they are acostumed to charge twice as much to ignorant travellers. "Sim sim, by the meter" the taxidriver agrees.
I get into the cab and the first thing I notice is the broken forewindow with a hole in it. I think about getting out again, but the taxidriver tells me: That´s nothing".
"What was that" I ask him, "A gunshot ?" "No,no," he says... "That´s from a manga that fell on the window." There are many manga (or mango as they say in some countries) trees in the city of Belem. They are famous as the killermangas as they just drop like a bomb on anything they can find. Bush would love Belem.
"Ok, I say, but you can drive like this?" "Yes yes, I am used to it" ...
So there we go. He doesn´t put the taximeter on so I ask him: "What about the meter ?" "The meter is broke." "But didnt we just combine that we would go by the meter ?" "Yes, but it´s broke. I´ll just charge you 20, ok ?" Hahaha. That was funny. So I pretend that I´m getting angry and say "Well, than I´ll better take another cab." "No,no, I´m sorry ... I´ll do it for 15 than..." So we go for 15, as I don´t want to get out and find another taxi with another broken meter.
The airport is about 20 minutes from the city. While we go I ask him about the place, and as I am here to make an item for television about prostitution, I better start right now, as taxidrivers usually know about these things.
But I don´t have to ask anything. As we pass in front of the "delegacia de polícia", he explains "On this corner you can find a lot of girls ... all kind of girls, young, old ..." "But in front of the police ?" I ask him. "Yeah..." he grins. "And right there is a good nightclub for you, if you want..." We drive by a big grey building with the words "Locomotive" written on the entrance. "The best place in town" he assures me. We get into the city and drive trough a crowded street with lots of trees. "This is where the manga fell on my window" he says. He drives and drives, then he stops. "We´d better ask someone ..." he doubts. We drive around and around for more than half an hour, and finally we find the place, on a dusty poor street. I pay him his 15 reais, and walk through the old, rusty door.
